Monday Bacon: Stupid is as…

…Stupid does.

Photo: It's running season

A college friend of mine had this photo up with a caption that running season has started. SRSLY? You need to ice your knees after you exercise? Cuz you HATE your knees? Cuz they were mean to you; disappointed you; shamed you? No, because running makes you”fit” right?!?

It boggles the mind. My springtime fb is filled with various woes of body breakdowns of runners. SRSLY. Why? Even when strength training is suggested, it’s scoffed as “it will interfere with my running.” SRSLY? Cuz you’re going to the running Olympics next week? Tell me you’re following a low fat diet too, cuz then I can feel confident in the fact that you’re an idiot.

Look, we get one real body on this go around in life. If you want to pound it into the ground, go right ahead. But no complaining. You choose to be weak and injured, own it. Those of us who want to be useful for as long as possible and strength train will carry you and your destroyed knees and hips up the stairs when you’re 40. Awesome. SRSLY.

Being powerful is like being a lady. If you have to tell people you are, you aren’t.

Friday Jams

Well, we’re week one into the baseball season and I say, “Welcome back boys.” The Brewers won their first home opener in five years and the Twins are above .500 for the first time in 20 years or something like that. (Yes, I know I’m exaggerating.) I’m just glad baseball is on. Without hockey this year, the basketball games have dominated the television (since I guess it’s against U.S. law to show more than three sports on tv…I miss Eurosport.)

So in honor, Dropkick Murphys, ‘The Boys Are Back.”

Enjoy the weekend.

An Opener is not like any other game.  There’s that little excitement, a faster beating of the heart. You know when you win that first one, you can’t lose ’em all.

Competition

I’ve always loved competition. It has the opportunity to teach a person so many things. How to prepare for a season or an event; how to win with grace and lose with pride; how to be a classy fellow competitor; and even how to play to the politics of each sport (and yes, there’s politics in every sport.)

The Merrie Monarch festival in Hilo, Hawaii combines the spirit of competition with the Hawaiian language and culture. The different styles of hula tell stories of war, beauty, and love. It’s stunning and at the same time, a very serious competition.

The teamwork and precision necessary in both appearance and dance is razor sharp and something to behold. In short, it’s one of my favorite competitions of the year.

Keeping Trixie safe

If you’ve had the opportunity to meet the Oz man, you’d understand that he’s pretty much the coolest dude, ever. This picture from a Michigan road trip years ago is a pretty good depiction of Oz. One of his favorite movies as a four year old was The Longest Day. If there’s war AND John Wayne, it’s thumbs up in his eyes.

My Oz has always marched to his own beat…

Who knowsForest

…which includes wearing his favorite bear ‘Forest’ on his head. He still does that. I don’t know why, you just don’t ask with Oscar.

There’s been a lot of “last times” as I’ve watched his pre-teen childhood go by lately. He stated that last fall was his “last trick or treating” and without even realizing it, his school Valentines party last year was THE last Valentine school party. It’s caused a few melancholy moments for this Ma but at the end of the day, I’m just so very thankful. For his health, his charm, and his love for bacon. SRSLY, he’s eating birthday bacon by the pound right now.

So Happy Birthday to our Oz man, we all look forward to seeing what the future holds for him and how he’ll kick it’s arse.

Some day you will be old enough to start reading fairy tales again.
