Monday Bacon: Texas

Texas

The perfect Branding Iron plate. Brisket; ribs; okra, and a red draw.

There are times that I miss Texas. Oooooo, not the whole state of it all, but the good parts that don’t exist north of the Mason Dixon. Of course first is the meat. We don’t get good meat up here. I was spoiled down there. Hell, a Gene’s Tasty burger or even a Braum’s burger is better than 90% of the burger you get up here. And a Herd’s Burger? Fuggitaboutit. I could take a left or a right out of my driveway for either great BBQ or some of the best BBQ. Here? Matt and I went to a BBQ joint here once. They didn’t have a smoker. Ummmmm, huh? Yup. We actually went to a BBQ joint that smelled of french fries. It was heartbreaking. Oh sure, I think there’s one or two okay places that people go to but a quick glance at the menu and they’re asking $13.50 for a brisket sammich. $13.50. For a brisket sammich. See that pic up there? MAYBE that plate PLUS the red draw cost $13.50 but I don’t think so. But you could get a roasted portobello sammich for $9.75. Hey, BBQ’s joints, if you sell Portobello sammiches you’re not a BBQ joint.

Also, they sell a 1/2# sausage for $12.50? For a 1/2# of sausage and shitty bread. Really? GFY. True story.

OH! Talk about sausage, I miss Windthorst sausage. Windthorst is a little German town nearby WF and the local grocer carried the sausage (the butcher actually trained at the gym and every so often he would say, “I left you some sausage in the fridge juli”. I loved him.)  I practically lived off of it down there. I have yet to eat a better breakfast than leftover Branding Iron, a little Windthorst sausage and some over easy eggs with French Press cawfee. Damn I miss it.

Of course I miss the people. My friends; my pilots; the nice kids at Market Street who brought out my groceries and had the verbal skills to carry on a conversation with an adult. That’s becoming a lost art. FoShizzle.

Sunday shootin’. Yes, all guns were empty of shells or clips and Yes, it still made me nervous the way Rose was holding that thing;)

I miss having fun gym conversations with good people who say, “Hey, why don’t you come out Sunday and we’ll do some shootin’.”  Heath, Janet, Morrison, Mary, Lael, Tina and my beautiful friend Veronique who is no longer with us. People who say, “Whaddo ya need?” God I miss that.

But what mostly brought on this bout of nostalgia was something that happened the other night that really made me miss these…

When an Irish lass wants a picture with true Texans, they oblige.

…Texas men. See, there’s something about Texas men. And no, I won’t say all Southern men because I’ve met some hyooge douche bags from the south that believe just because they tack an accent onto asshole words that it works for the little ladies of the north. F.O. From early childhood, these males are taught to show respect to women. Mad respect. Yes, of course there’s still creeps and men who don’t. But (in public anyway) they are not tolerated like they are up here. Milwaukee particularly. I noticed it right away. When out and about, a man would just as soon drive a woman off the road than allow them to merge in. At bars, they are aggressive and disrespectful. Unheard of down there. A man gets aggressive with a woman at P2 and he’s got a line of men waiting to  jumping in and kick his ass. True story.

I’ve even seen when drunk women probably DESERVE to get barked at for poor behavior down there and if a dude dares even try it, he’s quickly surrounded. I miss that.

The other night I had a waiter at a restaurant not only get aggressive with me (ask a waiter who isn’t even yours for a set of silverware and I guess that’s enough to set them off) but he put his hands on me and when I talked to the manager about it he ran over and jumped in my face. When I kept looking at the manager and asked him to remove this angry man from my face ‘angry waiter man’ actually got closer and tried to brush me back. It was upsetting to say the least. That the manager did nothing was disturbing,  yes. But that two men from the kitchen were standing right there and did nothing to reel this guy in was most distressful. See, that wouldn’t happen in Texas. Men don’t stand by and let women get treated like that. I miss it. It makes me sad. I’ve seen it in the gyms; at bars; in coffee shops and now at Hamburger Mary’s.

Being disrespected is one thing, ya gotta have thick skin around this whole life thing. But when a man is trying to brush back a woman in public? You stand up and say  nope, that’s not how we do things ’round here. At least that’s how it is in Texas. And I miss it.

Someday I’m going to have a Herds Burger birthday cake!

Herd’s burgers. I really miss Herd’s burgers too. In case I haven’t mentioned it.

Respect yourself and others will respect you.

Confucius

**actually this is wrong. Just because you respect yourself doesn’t mean you’ll be respected. There are a lot of folks out there who don’t own the self-esteem to show respect to others. They need to show anger or aggressiveness towards others they think they can bully. It’s pathetic and sad.

Friday Jams

When I was young, I would dream of traveling. From a very early age, I wanted to be a flight attendant. I had flown to Detroit when I was in the 5th grade and thought it was the most exciting thing I could ever do. I remember the plane was pretty empty so the Stewardess let me sit wherever I wanted. I had my little Barbie filled vintage (well, it’s vintage now!) travel beauty case…

vintage

I still have my Barbie clothes filled Vintage Samsonite Vintage Beauty Case of my mom’s. I even use it for a purse when traveling in the states.

…and even though it was late in the evening, I refused to go to sleep. I didn’t want to miss a minute. Which is the reason I couldn’t be too tough on the Oz man who pretty much stayed awake for our entire red-eye flight back from Seattle in July.

Anyways.

Back then, the Northwest Orient Stewardesses still dressed up. Ever see a flight crew from Emirates Air walk through an airport? It’s pretty spectacular. Same with Korean Air. Uniforms perfect; hair perfect; walking in unison and altogether quite impressive. Thing is, that’s how Stewardesses ALL used to look. Now, I’m not bagging on current flight attendants. After flying regularly for work, I wouldn’t want their job. But to an impressionable 5th grader, this was the life for me. Travel to exotic destinations like Detroit, Michigan? WOW!

I kept this dream alive for many years.  I guess until I was in the 10th grade and my parents started talking about college visitations. Uhhhhhh, huh? But I don’t wanna go to college, I want to go to Northwest Orient Airlines U! So off to college I went in little Fremont, Nebraska and bye bye glamorous flight attendant job.

But throughout my 20’s and 30’s, I loved to travel. When I started traveling with Rip and crew, I had an absolute blast. Sooooooo, I get to travel around the country (along with a few harrowing trips into Canadia) and visit gyms; meet awesome people who wanted to get strong; eat amazing food from Penn Cove steamers in the Seattle area to Hot Brown in Louisville to Pepe’s Pizza in New Haven; and gather enough FF miles that after a couple of years, I was a regular in the First Class (free wine. Yabuddy!) I became besties with the Park & Ride crew and knew exactly where I could get my cawfee based on my gate number in the MSP Airport. I loved it. Though some of the traveling got tougher after moving down to Texas (I hated that 2 hour drive to DFW), I’m incredibly thankful for the opportunities I had during those years. They made me a better coach and introduced me to the Husband.

After moving on from that gig, I’ve been very fortunate to continue traveling. Strongman contests in Finnish Lapland and Lithuania; honeymoon in Budapest; Highland Games in Seattle (my favorite.) As much dreaming as I did when I was that little girl? Even I didn’t dream this big. I thought it would be cool some day to fly to Hawaii. Or a beautiful Carribean island. But never this. And especially four years ago when we lifted some heavy stuff and threw weights over a bar and around the field at my first Highlander, NEVER did I dream that I’d be getting ready to fly to Scotland to throw at a Highland Games with tons of American friends and most importantly, my hubby.

But here we are. And no, I haven’t started packing. (I’m a late packer, leave Tuesday afternoon so probably will dig up my suitcase Tuesday morning. It drives Matt nuts who likes to pack early and get to the airport even earlier. Suffice it to say, we don’t necessarily travel well together. Meeting up in airports in faraway lands is more romantic anyway. True story.) I’ve already talked about wanting to represent America in a positive light when I travel overseas so I’m probably nicer when I’m there. Most of the time anyway. Heh.

Of course most of us know how competitive I am and of course, the competition is the reason we’re going. But as I get closer to digging out the big suitcase, I get more and more excited for the adventure. All of it. Breathing Scottish air; anticipating running into people we may know about town; sharing an apartment with fellow competitors and new friends; competing with the best. The food; the locals; the customs. And afterwards? Heading to London to share time and space with Strongman friends Laurence Shahlaei and his beloved Liz and hopefully a couple of others. Getting to train with one of Britain’s strongest; laughing with my Lapland buddy; Stonehenge; Matt’s Birthday celebration…just everything. Sharing it all with Matt. WOW.

But because we’re, ya know, ‘Merica’s. And because it’s Friday Jams.

Fox News

Bigg news

We received an e-mail yesterday morning from our Athletic Director for this weekend asking if we could give a little demo in the morning for the upcoming Wisconsin Highland Games. I say of course (and tell Bigg about it later;) and ask for details. When I was told to just come on down and meet around 6:30, I thought uhhhhh, A.M??? Ugh. Morning tv. Hokay sure.

Even though it was very early and we woke up late so didn’t have time to stop for coffee, it was a blast. We brought some of our gear and grabbed a caber from the storage shed. Getting in around 10 caber toss’ before 7am was actually pretty cool. Matt did an awesome job with host, Chip Brewster (is that his real name? I have no idea, I don’t watch morning news) going through the 56# weight for distance throw. I thought ‘ol Chip was going to forget to release and take a ride with the weight but seemed to remember at the last second. He and Matt had a great rapport and the spot went flawlessly. Here’s the video.

Since there were other event coordinators that showed up, I got to FINALLY have some fun with the battle Ax’s. I’ve seen these guys year after year and never had the chance to go throw so I took advantage of down time this morning and got some quick lessons from Jenny (who in turn threw the 21# weight for distance and attempted to pick the caber in full skirts. Jennie is awesome.) It took a bit but I finally found my groove and on one toss, hit the handle of another Ax. I was quite impressed with myself.

Axe in Handle

From there, we got to watch Chip have high tea with Mary, Queen of Scots and one of her ladies in waiting. Now, I’ve seen plenty of pictures of our Texan Belle Brittney Boswell in these outfits but have never seen them live. The Queen was in good spirits this morning and gave me some history on herself. For instance, did you know that Mary, Queen of Scots was a huge sports fan? In fact, she would dress as a commoner to be able to participate in sports without being known. I thought that was pretty cool. So we made plans for the Queen to visit the field at some point and I’ll prep the athletes to make sure we give a proper bow to her. Heh.

OH! We also found out that Matt’s picture was being used on all of the Promo materials, including a digital Billboard off Hwy 94. Hilarious. They gave us a printout of it…

We’re going to grab some beer and chips later and just go sit on the side of the highway and watch a supersized Bigg click on every 8 seconds. Cuz that sounds fun.

Overall it was a very fun morning. To be able to hang a little bit with others from the Games that we don’t get to visit since we’re on the field all day was a huge treasure. We also had Haggis and were told where we can get Haggis pasties. Let me say that again. Haggis. Pasties. We know what’s for dinner tonight. Giddyup.

We’re thankful to finish the summer throwing right here in our backyard. Waking up and driving 15 minutes to a Games, especially one of this size with a throwing group that includes Craig Smith and the Burchett boys to name just a few is a treat. Promoting the Games was lots of fun, but I think I’ll stick to my day job. I was too nervous for that television stuff.

Monday Bacon: Pink Ladies

pinkladies

This past weekend was Jane and Jason Clevenger’s Throwing for the Cure Highland Games in Cherry Valley, Il. This was our second year attending and Matt’s first year throwing. The Games is part of the Cherry Valley days festival and a huge fundraiser for Jane’s cancer walk. This weekend alone put her over $4,400 donated, amazing. Last year, we had to bolt before the last Caber toss to get back home as the Bigg guy was flying out early the next morning for work. Bummer. THIS year we got to hang out until the end which was good cuz the rain delays pushed the events later than planned.

Oh well. Rain. If your season goes so smooth that you don’t get to throw at least once in snow and rain it’s boring. Rain? Pffffffttt…

FU Rain

Prior to the heavens opening up, we were able to get a great group pic. This year’s T-shirts really stood out and our very own graphic designer, Mike Pearce, drew up a new logo for the event and the Pink shirts turned out awesome. You could spot a thrower from far afar (I meant to say that.) I dare you to show me a better group pic. Really.

pinkladies2

Jason added a Women’s Masters class this year which is MUCH appreciated! Truth be told, it gets tough throwing against these 20 something whipper snapper former D1 track and field ladies. In reality though, throwing with the likes of Katie, Alissa, Candice, Topaz, and Victoria  is a gift. I always walk away a better thrower when I’m with this group and they’ve become our Highland/Summer fmaily. Add in the coaching and great attitudes of Master throwers Sue and Ruth and our new friends Katie and Annie all the way from the eastern seaboard and you have a group of Pink Ladies that kick ass even over Rizzo and her gang (but I still want a Pink Ladies satin jacket. True story.)

pinkladies4

Annie is a two-time breast cancer survivor so having her with us, in our group throwing heavy stuff in the rain was not only an honor, but a complete inspiration.

ALSO, part of the day includes a silent auction with items donated that range from a Coach clutch to a new pair of Weightlifting shoes. We hit that hard last year but had to cut ourselves off this year to save funds for our Scotland trip coming up in two weeks. But Oooooo, it was hard. Tables of our very favorite things in life right there for the grabbing. Damn budgets.

Thanks so much to Jason, Jane, Jasmine and all the helpers who put on a great day. No, the rain didn’t ruin it. Not even a little bit. Cuz Highland Games athletes are made of tougher stuff. True story. If you’re anywhere in the vicinity of this one next year, we can’t recommend it enough!

The best thing one can do when it’s raining is to let it rain.
