PR’s and such…

The crew at CrossFit Barrington and I had a great afternoon on Saturday at a Train the Trainers Pulling camp. We walked through the easiest and most effective ways to teach and cue Deadlifts and Power Cleans. Everyone did a great job and latched on to the simple steps of coaching and moved right into quickly correcting issues that arise from less than optimum form. And of course, they were as entertaining as always.

One of the more entertaining characters is Craig. The last time I was at the gym, it quickly became clear that Craig is very strong. And a little nuts. Really, quite a good combination in the strength game. So when he came up to me at the end of 4+ hours of deadlifting and working the power clean and said, “I kinda feel like I should PR my squat since you’re here” I said, “hokay!”

Craig’s remnants of his November beard

We warmed him up, did one (slightly loose) squat at 440 and loaded the bar at 460. OH! I failed to grab a picture of his new ‘stache so I grabbed this one off his fb page. It was pretty cool. The video of the squat is there too. His 460 was much tighter than his last warm up and even he may have been a little surprised at how fast he got the bar up. PR! Had we been at a meet, 475 would have been his 3rd attempt. Pretty cool. In fact we’ll be looking for a meet to get him to this season…stay tuned. At 190#, he should do well in his first meet.

Special thanks to Brian and Leah, Chris and their trainers for a great afternoon and fun dinner. Anyone looking for an excellent mix of strength, strongman, and CrossFit with knowledgeable trainers/coaches in the Chicago area, I highly recommend CrossFit Barrington. We’ll be back in a couple of months for a Pressing camp. We’ll wait until Bigg can put up some big numbers with the log again. Heh.

Also,

Welcome Raelynn Sue to the world (here with much older and wiser cousin Addi.) Bigg’s sister had an original due date of Christmas but some drama here and there kept moving up the date. The doc’s were prepared to bust out baby today when she decided to take matters into her own hands and meet the world in the wee hours of Monday morning. Baby healthy, Mama healthy…all good. It’s been a while since I’ve had a brand new baby in my arms and it was pretty special. Baby smells, baby noises, and good health all around has all of us breathing a small sigh of relief, and a huge sigh of thanks.

As for tosabarbell? Equipment keeps trickling in, the 2 Man Crew is finishing up some details and we’re closer than ever at getting going. All in all, a pretty awesome weekend.

Friday Jams

Willy Moon “Yeah Yeah.”  Great song to fire up with. Extremely stupid video. Meh, can’t have everything.

The fun part about this song is that no matter how salty Oz can get, this song gets him grooving again. Score.

Enjoy the weekend.

I do not try to dance better than anyone else. I only try to to dance better than myself.

Chivalry…and Lack Thereof

An interesting little wrinkle has been added to the fold of recent training. A young, loud, upper body work only “man” has started talking (loudly) to anyone who will listen about all of his bitches. See, when he’s fu*king his main bitch, he has bitches in line waiting…or so he says. He also will talk about the stupidity of his “main bitch”, that’s awesome.  He’s also obviously just discovered the “F” word because it’s in every three or four words of each sentence. Awesome.

Honestly, am I so naive that I am shocked anyone this back woods is even around anymore? What kind of upbringing do you have to address women as ‘bitches?’ What was really awesome, last week, was when he took the clip off my platform while I was loading my deadlift bar. I say, “Did you take my clip?” a couple of times before he mumbled for me to “relax” and threw the clip at my platform. Yup, he threw it. OH! After talking to the gym owner about it, he told me this person is at the police academy!  Goodie. The poster child for every wanna be prospect for police brutality.

However, my beef isn’t really with him. He’s backwards, big deal. My disappointment lies in every other man in that gym who looks embarrassed and uncomfortable while he’s spewing his verbal sewage and will try to walk away BUT THEY DON’T SAY ANYTHING TO HIM! As in, “Dude, that’s completely inappropriate, knock it off.” How hard is that??

Now, being disrespected in a black iron gym is not anything new. Happens all the time as the boys will need to flex their ego a bit. I’ve had men in this gym grab weights off my squat rack that I’ve set up for my sets, smile and say, “Thanks for finding that for me.” Funny, eh? But the behavior of this kid just seems hostile enough to affect how I feel when I walk in the gym and see him in there.

The whole mess makes me miss my Grandpa. See, my G’pa was a tough guy. He grew up in an orphanage in Chicago, during the depression, keeping he and his brothers together as best as possible. He was a fighter, in every sense of the word. There are some pretty good Grandpa stories about some of his more famous fights. A whole weekend is needed for Grandpa stories…believe me, we’ve done it. So how did this tough guy treat my Grandma?

Like a queen. Literally. It would not occur to me, growing up or even now, that he would have shown her (or other women) disrespect. I’m sure they argued, I guess. I can’t recall my Grandma ever opening her own door, carrying anything heavier than a partially filled laundry basket, and as I write this I can picture the countless times he would grab her hand if the walk was more than a few steps long. A man who received such little love, in one of the harshest times in our history, never stopped showing my Grandma love. He was not intimidated or had the silly notion that this made him LESS of a man, it proved his absolute confidence in himself and I loved that about him.

My Grandpa would not only speak up to this bully at the gym, he’d clock him. It wouldn’t matter that he was a foot shorter, that talk would not stand with him. Maybe that’s my problem, I grew up in an atmosphere of such unrealistic care and respect so my expectations are too high? I dunno. I do know that now I miss my Grandpa and if I see this idiot at the gym again, I’ll try to think happy thoughts of my G’pa and ignore the unpleasantness. And I guess I’ll hold on to enough hope that someone will have the character to speak up to this guy. We’ll see.

Some say the age of chivalry is past, that the spirit of romance is dead. The age of chivalry is never past, so long as there is a wrong left unredressed on earth.

Mind Boggling

After teeter-tottering on the idea of having the NYC marathon go on in spite of the fact that a major hurricane just displaced hundreds, if not thousands of the people in his charge, Mayor Bloomberg has moved on to more important matters.

Ensuring the homeless of NYC receive proper nutrition…or no food at all. How is it that you NYC people haven’t strung this man up? First he takes your salt. Then your ginormous soda’s. He comes up with hair brained scheme after hair brained scheme and yet he’s still in office. Help me understand this.

Now, I will be the first to admit that the following story may be not be 100% accurate, really these days, what journalism is? But it was written here  that meals given to shelters must list precise nutritional data. This means that surplus food from restaurants and the like are not able to go to the hungry…until they dig it out of the garbage first. Bastard.

We talk about food a lot in the strength game, but rarely do we discuss the fact that lots of people just don’t have it. We joke about how “starving” we are post-training but really, have you ever been hungry? Hungry, as in, I have no idea how to feed my kids this week? Hungry, as in, I’m going to eat crackers and Hot Cocoa from work because it’s free? Hungry, as in, I need to go humble myself so we have food? If not, I’m happy for you. Really. It’s unpleasant. If so, you may understand how offensive this new rule is.

There’s nothing I can do from Wisconsin about this, other than continue to contribute to those in need here. There may be nothing you can do about this from where you sit, other than contribute to those in need where you are. Just do something.

And those of you in NYC? I look forward to the day when I hear you’ve finally had enough of this guy. SRSLY.

When someone is drowning, you do more than throw a life preserver. You get into the water.
