Strong Belly

CHIYONOFUJI Mitsugu

An interesting thread appeared on Rip’s forum the other day about someone who started the program but was concerned about his growing belly. My favorite (tongue in cheek) quote by Carlos Daniel is: “You can’t have abs if you have a big fat belly and then chicks won’t fuck you because you’re not ripped and you’d be obligated to become a non-practicing heterosexual.”

Heh. Funny. Because men, if you don’t realize by now that a big, strong belly=big, strong man, you’re missing the point of strength training.  It’s true. Chiyonofuji (above) is one of the winningest Sumo wrestlers of all time, despite his (in comparison) small belly v. his opponents. However; the size of his belly would make most current day “males” cringe.

A thick belly=strong. Yes? Are you going to have a 400+ pound Log Press or a 340+ pound strict press without a belly? Nope. Is there muscle in that belly? Yup. Duh.

Kaz had a great belly. So does Kanstaninovs…

Big. Thick. Strong. These men didn’t care about abs, they cared about strong.  As for me? I call it a win/win. (Rip calls it Juli porn. Both work for me.)

Lost sounds

Now that the sounds of country have been bastardized by the likes of Carrie Underwood and Taylor Swift, it’s unlikely we’ll be graced with such purity of sound like that of Kitty Wells.  Thanks for the music.

Sunday Bacon and PR

It’s been long enough since we’ve had bacon for breakfast that we were significantly shamed. So after breakfast sammiches, we headed to the gym. I had a session while Bigg did some Log Pressing.

He PR’d, 1×5@380#. Bacon helped, I’m sure.

Friday Jams

I’ve had one decent nights sleep in the past week or so and last night’s is a record breaker for awful. But I need to squat this morning and I’m determined to stay on track as the weights are finally coming up as I rehab my back.

So I need espresso. Now. That’s easy. I also need good music. The music part is tricky. I can’t have something too metal or it will give me a full blown headache before I train and right now the baby lack-of-good-sleep headache that’s walking around with me is tolerable.  I can’t have something too mellow or I’ll just want to lay down on the platform and take a much needed nap.

So I went with Serj Tankian’s Occupied Tears. The slow start that ramps up to an acceptable bang, with a soft break in the middle, and a kick ass ending without going overboard is just what I need. Plus, someone actually spent time on putting together a decent video. Win/win.

Enjoy your weekend.
