Gracious to Door Mat in 3, 2, 1…

I believe in being gracious. In showing respect, kindness, recognizing that my little world is full of other people going through other things. I believe that people who are close to people I’m close to should be shown respect. I may not know you, I may not know you well, but someone I love cares for you and out of respect to them, I’ll show you respect.  Simple.

However, what happens when people take the graciousness you offer, and begin treating you like a door mat?

It happens, there are people who suck at life. They are takers; whose world’s are so small they believe that their views are the sun and we are put here to revolve around them. What then?

There is a gym in town I refuse to train at specifically because of the handful of men who’s mommy’s told them one too many times that they are the very most special in the world and everyone else is common. (Or maybe not, I just don’t have experience with why men grow up to be bullyish, selfish assholes.) The owner of the gym is one of the most positive, experienced, and fun men I know here in Milwaukee but his patrons are not. When I first got to town, I believed that even when grown men would come and take plates off my rack that I just spent 10 minutes setting up for my squat sets, I should be gracious. After all, this isn’t my sandbox. I’ll play nice out of respect for Matt who has trained there for years. The problem was that people behaved completely differently when Matt was with me. Now, there are some very good folks from the gym that I miss seeing on a regular basis but knowing I could be dealing with idiots during my training sessions was just stressful enough for me to stay away.

Honestly, that was new for me. I’ve trained many places and once folks see you setting up a squat rack, they show THEIR graciousness and back off. But not here, so I switched gyms when I needed some accessory work that I couldn’t do in our home gym. It finally occurred to me that just because an environment or people are good to (or for) Matt, they may not be for me.

And that’s the crux of being plopped down in someone else’s established life.  While I feel I need to be gracious and in some way accepting of various shit slung my way, I suddenly feel like a door mat to folks who are not of the belief that THEY in turn are gracious to me just because I’m here with Matt.

So I’ve learned some good lessons here in the last year. Two way street folks. I show respect to you for the person you are and the impact you’ve had in lives of those I care for. Once that respect isn’t reciprocated, then I change course. Yes, I will still show respect when life demands that we’re in the same room. Of course. But I’m no door mat and taking advantage of a friendship with Matt doesn’t change that. Remember, he’s a lot nicer than I am. A lot.

Luckily for me, there are some of the most amazing people I’ve had the pleasure to be around here in Milwaukee. And other gyms who are not only run by gracious hosts, but even make me feel like a friend when we bump into each other. I value that, and them. It means the world to me and I’m always looking forward to our next outing. (Even if it’s in spin class which is really, really hard!)

Be gracious. Smile at people. Don’t put silly shit that means nothing above being nice to people. Don’t treat people like door mats but more importantly, don’t allow others to treat you as such. Never ever.

I’ve been through it all, baby, I’m mother courage.

Monday Bacon: Dogs

People love their dogs. I thought of that this weekend as I watched this…

It also occurred to me that the majority of my FB peeps love their dogs…

Coincidence? I dunno. Are dog people drawn to other dog people or does it just happen that so many people love their dogs? Of course we love our dogs. Preacher was our first Kuvasz and when we brought him home over 11 years ago, he plopped down on the living room floor and told us he was home. He’s our security system and not much goes on in the world around his house that he doesn’t know about. He can pretend not to hear us call for him but then be a floor and two rooms away when he hears the cheese being opened. He’ll come running. Dazzle joined our family last year and has added some pep to our lives. She’s been the perfect companion for Preacher and has kept him feeling  young as he’s entering his senior citizen years. They love coming into the gym with me to train, but not on Snatch and Clean days. Dropping the bar from overhead stresses out Dazzle.

It’s always nice when the Bigg dogs take time to stop and smell the flowers…

One of my most favorite dogs (Bosco) hails from Melbourne, FL and he owns two of my most favorite gym peeps from Harbor City CrossFit…

Dogs give us security, laughter, snuggles, silliness, a reason to vacuum, friendship, and love. I can’t imagine a life without them.

The average dog is a nicer person than the average person.

Friday Jams

Queen. Don’t Stop Me Now.

Not just tonight, but all weekend we’re going to have ourselves a good time. My girl is taking her first little road trip and driving from Minnesooota all the way to Milwaukee, heh. She has moral support and a GPS, all should be well. It’s still unclear if her twin will be coming with her, of course I love to have all my keiki in one place but sometimes work comes first.

Tomorrow is a full day. We head to Bayview for the annual Bayview Bash Strongman contest where Bigg will be helping out.

We jet back to tosa for an afternoon football game and then have pumpkin carving scheduled for after dinner. Yup, pumpkin carving. Yup, I know it’s early but when I have my kids in one place, we take advantage of it.

Besides, getting an extra week or two out of our favorite holiday is festive. We like festive.

Enjoy your weekend. To all the throwers out there in New Mexico, Loon Mtn., and elsewhere…Kilt it!

Everything you see I owe to spaghetti.

2 Reasons

A Venti sized Brew-Ha appeared on the news and the interwebz yesterday. It seems Starbucks CEO has asked that people not open carry weapons into their shops for fear of disturbing gun rights opponents. Uhhhhhh, ok. He specifically said that if folks want to bring their weapons in anyway, “We’ll serve them with a smile and not confront them.”

But some of the Gunz folks completely over reacted (as Americans tend to do these days) and some have called for a ban on all Starbucks.  Hey! Folks! Calm down and get the facts. Where’s THAT shirt? I’d wear that shirt. Just slow down, get the facts, and stop reacting with temper tantrums that equal a two year old’s.

The obvious question is…why give a press release at all? You basically said nothing and people are so reactionary that both sides were pissed off at nothing you said. Starbucks asked folks not to bring their guns in, but if they want to, that’s okay too. Huh? So what you’re ACTUALLY saying is, uh, status quo, dude? Nothing to see here, move along.

I didn’t even give it a second thought. Until someone asked me to ban Starbucks for their anti-gun views. Uhhhhhh, no. See, there are two reasons why I ban restaurants (folks at the Sherbrook on North ave. pay attention) Shit Service and Shit Product. Starbucks walks north of those two lines (at times, barely) so I’ll stick with an occasional drive through triple tall Americano thank you very much. What I won’t do is participate in this hyper-sensitive hysteria that 24-7 news has brought on. Good lord people, what happens in your life when something important goes awry? I’m just so very tired of this “if you’re not with us,  you’re against us” bullshit that’s at every corner in America. You have Christian values that disagree with another persons lifestyle? BAN THEM! No more Chicken sammiches! Death to your business.

OR

Ya know what? I don’t feel comfortable eating there so I won’t but I’ll shut up about it cuz I respect their right to disagree with me just as I have a right to disagree with them. Hysterical over reaction? Media pawns folks, that’s what you become. Stop that. But at the very least, get the facts and choose for yourself.

For thirty years,” he said, “I’ve sailed the seas and seen good and bad, better and worse, fair weather and foul, provisions running out, knives going, and what not. Well, now I tell you, I never seen good come o’ goodness yet. Him as strikes first is my fancy; dead men don’t bite; them’s my views—amen, so be it.
